How I economized my Swiffer Wet-Jet

I love my Swiffer.  I thought it was the coolest thing.   A push of the button and spray out the cleaner, wipe and done!  But, I had two issues with it.  1.  Refills are pricey, and 2.  I don't like strong chemicals.  So this was how I've adapted...

First, I took a cloth diaper, the pre folded kind, and using an actual swiffer pad as a guide for size, I folded the sides over and stitched them down.  Then I added the soft sides of velcro in 3 places down each edge.  (The black tabs above)  You don't want velcro all the way because it holds better than the pad "Velcro" and would be very hard to get off.  This is just right.

Remove and wash with your whites. It will look dingy if you don't super bleach it, but that is part of getting over the thing in our brains that tells us that white=clean.

The second thing I did, was to reuse the bottle so I don't have to buy that all the time either.
Did you know that vinegar kills 99.9% of germs too? And it doesn't take much.  So I drilled a few holes in the bottom of the bottle.  I fill it with either water alone, water and vinegar, or sometimes I'll put just 1 or 2 drops of dish soap in and then water if I think my floor is greasy.
I suppose you could put about anything you like to clean with in there too.

Then make sure to dry off the bottle very well, especially around the holes, and I put sticky tack and smush it into the holes and all around it.  Stick the bottle back into the swiffer and you are ready to go.
I do recommend not having it completely full for storage and/or make sure that it isn't seeping out of those holes.  I've come back and found my batteries rusted out thereby negating one of my reasons for doing all this - saving money!  :-)
